Rookie Fung is the matchplay king

Ho Chi Minh, October 2: Malaysian Nicholas Fung won the duel of the young pretenders today in the final of the US$60,000 Mercedes-Benz Masters Vietnam.

The 20-year-old from Sabah beat Thailand’s Panuphol Pittayarat, aged 17, 4&3 at Song Be Golf Resort.

The victory was fine reward for Fung who has been enjoying an outstanding rookie season as a professional.

He has not missed a cut in seven events on the Mercedes-Benz Tour – a circuit formed in 2007 for the very purpose of allowing young professionals like Fung to learn the trade of being a Tour professional.

Young Guns to Face off in final

Ho Chi Minh, October 1: Thailand’s Panuphol Pittayarat and Nicholas Fung from Malaysia, two of the region’s most exciting young golfers, will face each other in the final of the US$60,000 Mercedes-Benz Masters Vietnam tomorrow at Song Be Golf Resort.

Panuphol, aged 17, and Fung, who turned 20 last July, steamrolled their opposition in today’s quarterfinals and semifinals.

While the world will be watching the Ryder Cup, the game of golf’s most famous and popular Matchplay tournament, this weekend Asia can look forward to watching a mouthwatering Matchplay final close to home.

Wisut leads the way as seeds tumble

Ho Chi Minh, September 30: Top seeds Namchok Tantipokhakul and Thanyakon Khrongpha from Thailand were sensationally knocked out on the opening day of the US$60,000 Mercedes-Benz Masters Vietnam today.

Defending champion Namchok, seeded one, comfortably won his morning match by beating Vietnam’s Nguyen Thai Duong 6&4 but in the afternoon lost to compatriot Ronnachai Jamnong in a memorable game.

Namchok, the reigning Mercedes-Benz Tour Order of Merit champion, was four up after 11 holes before his opponent won five out of the next seven holes. Namchok bogeyed the final hole to lose by one hole.

Top seed Namchok eyes title defence

Ho Chi Minh, September 29: Namchok Tantipokhakul from Thailand, seeded number one and the defending champion, will face Vietnam’s Nguyen Thai Duong in the first round of this week’s Mercedes-Benz Masters Vietnam.

The US$60,000 tournament, which marks the first time the Mercedes-Benz Tour has staged a Matchplay event, tees off tomorrow at Song Be Golf Resort featuring 32 of the circuit’s best players lining up in 16 exciting matches.

Second seed Thanyakon Khrongpha from Thailand, who has caught the eye with a brilliant rookie season, has been drawn against Vietnam’s leading golfer Tran Le Duy Nhat.

Matchplay Thriller at Song Be

Ho Chi Minh, September 8: Professional golf in Vietnam will break new ground this year when it witnesses its first ever Matchplay tournament at the Mercedes-Benz Masters Vietnam.

The US$60,000 tournament, which will also mark the first time the Mercedes-Benz Tour has staged a Matchplay event, will be played at Song Be Golf Resort from September 30 to October 2.

A field of 32 players will compete in what will be the penultimate tournament on this season’s Mercedes-Benz Tour, which boasts 10 events.

New Thai Star Namchok Conquers Tour

Hanoi, November 14: Namchok Tantipokhakul completed the finest season of his fledgling career today by winning the US$80,000 Mercedes-Benz Masters Vietnam and securing the Mercedes-Benz Tour Order of Merit title.

The 22 year old Thai fired a final round one-over-par 73 to finish one stroke ahead of compatriot Pavit Tangkamolprasert. Pavit came in with a 67 at Kings’ Island Golf Club, north of Hanoi.

Namchok finished with a four-round-aggregate of 16-under-par 272 and earned a cheque for US$13,000.

Tour Titles in Sight for Namchok

Hanoi, November 13: Namchok Tantipokhakul opened up a three stroke lead in the US$80,000 Mercedes-Benz Masters Vietnam today after the third round with another polished sub 70 performance.

The Thai golfer fired a five-under-par 67 at Kings’ Island Golf Club, north of Hanoi, for an impressive total of 17-under-par 199.

Nine Birdie Namchok on Top

Hanoi, November 12: Thailand’s Namchok Tantipokhakul fired a course record seven-under-par 65 today to take the halfway lead in the US$80,000 Mercedes-Benz Masters Vietnam.

The talented 22 year old nailed nine birdies at Kings’ Island Golf Club to move to 12 under par for the tournament for a one stroke lead over compatriot Panuphol Pittayarat.

Panuphol, aged 16, carded a 66, in what is the season-ending Tour Championship on the Mercedes-Benz Tour.
