Kwanchai shoots 63 to join Jazz on top at Singha Chiangmai Open

August 8, Chiangmai: Thailand’s Jazz Janewattananond is hitting most of the right notes at the Singha Chiangmai Open, a 68 on Saturday seeing him share the lead with 2013 ASEAN PGA Tour number one Kwanchai Tannin heading into the final round.

Teenager Janewattananond, hotly fancied for a breakthrough win after a season of near misses, posted six birdies in his opening 12 holes but stumbled near the end of his round to fall into a tie for the lead with Kwanchai, who sizzled with an eight-under-par 63.

The duo are on 14-under 199 and hold a one-stroke advantage over multiple winner Thaworn Wiratchant, who shot 66, and joint overnight leader Sutijet Kooratanapisan, in with a 69 at Mae Jo Golf Resort & Spa.

Thai legend Prayad Marksaeng, currently headingthe ASEAN PGA Tour moneylist chiefly due to his victory at the Singha Pattaya Open, vied for the lead all round before a nightmarish double bogey six on the final hole saw him sign for a 68.

Prayad, a recent winner on the Japan Tour, is tied with Piya Swangarunporn and Rattanon Wannasrichan, who won on the Asian Development Tour last week, two shots back. Rattanon’s 65 would have been even better if not for a damaging double bogey on the 15th hole.

Defending champion Chapchai Nirat climbed the leaderboard with a 65 and lies four shots adrift of the leaders.

Janewattananond, joint top with Sutijet at the halfway mark, was two ahead of the pack after 12 holes but bogeys on the 13th, 15th and 17th holes brought him back to the field.

The 19 year old, who contended at both OneAsia’s Singha Corporation Thailand Open and the Queen’s Cup on the Asian Tour in June, finishing fourth and third respectively, birdied the 16th to partly stop the bleeding.

Kwanchai, a two-time ASEAN PGA Tour winner in 2013, played a flawless round with six birdies and a superb eagle at the par-five 16th hole.

The Singha Chiangmai Open is jointly sanctioned by the ASEAN PGA Tour and the All Thailand Golf Tour.
