Flawless Kwanchai Leads

October 14, Jakarta: In-form Thai golfer Kwanchai Tannin, who is the nephew of Prayad Marksaeng, took the first round lead in the US$60,000 Mercedes-Benz Masters Indonesia today after carding a bogey free six-under par 66.

His compatriot Wisut Artjanawat, a multiple winner on the Mercedes-Benz Tour, is in second place after shooting a 68 at Emeralda Golf and Country Club.
The two frontrunners are rising stars in Southeast Asia and another exciting prospect Quincy Quek from Singapore is also in the hunt after carding a 69, along with Filipino Gene Bondoc and Ronnachai Jamnong from Thailand.

Kwanchai, aged 23, was once ranked the top amateur in Thailand and was often touted as the next Boonchu Ruangkit. He has won twice on the domestic tour in Thailand but only now has he started to find his feet at the top level.

Tour Championship heads to Kings’ Island

Hanoi, October 13: The Mercedes-Benz Masters Vietnam will be the focus of attention this year on the Mercedes-Benz Tour as for the first time it has been positioned as the prestigious season-ending Tour Championship.

The tournament will be played at Kings’ Island Golf Club in Hanoi from November 11 to 14 and boast prize money of US$80,000, which is an increase of US$5,000 from last year’s Tour Championship.

Only the top-60 players from Mercedes-Benz Tour Order of Merit after the penultimate event on Tour are eligible to play in the Mercedes-Benz Masters Vietnam – an event that acts as a reward to those players who have performed the best during the year.

Rory Raring to go in Indonesia

October 13, Jakarta: Indonesia’s Rory Hie could be the man to beat at this week’s Mercedes-Benz Masters Indonesia as Emeralda Golf and Country Club, which is host the venue for the second successive season.

The 21 year old, in his second year as a professional, knows the courses there like the back of his hand as he has been regularly practicing at the club.

Hie will also be buoyed by the fact he won The International Championship last year on home soil to become the first Indonesian to win on the Mercedes-Benz Tour. It was also his first victory as a professional.

Namchok Nails Victory

Pattaya, September 19 – Namchok Tantipokhakul of Thailand underlined his huge potential by outduelling countryman Chawinroj Rungsrichai in a gripping head-to-head battle to win the US$50,000 B-ing Championship on the Mercedes-Benz Tour on Saturday.

Namchok, 22, birdied two of the last five holes to post a level par 72 and a winning score of seven under 281, two ahead of Chawinroj who had two chip in birdies in the final four holes to pile on the pressure in what developed into a matchplay contest.

Fellow Thai Sattaya Sapupramai was third on one under 287 after a closing 72, the only other player in the field to finish below par.

Namchok Takes the Lead

Pattaya, September 18 – Rising star Namchok Tantipokhakul took full advantage of playing on his home course on Friday with a bogey-free 69 to take a two-shot lead into the final round of the B-ing Championship on the Mercedes-Benz Tour

The 22-year-old Thai, second behind Angelo Que in the Tour’s ICTSI Mt. Malarayat Championship, Philippines, earlier in the year, is on seven-under-par 209 at Bangpra Golf Club.

Countryman Chawinroj Rungsrichai, looking for his first win after five years as a professional, shot a sizzling four under 68 to grab second spot. He lies three shots ahead of 18-year-old pro debutant Phiphatphong Naewsuk, who carded a 70 for third place.

Thai Duo Share B-ing Lead

Pattaya, September 17 – Thailand’s Atthaphon Prathummanee reaped the benefit from a new fitness regime with a composed one-under-par 71 in tough conditions on Thursday to share the halfway lead with fast-charging countryman Namchok Tantipokhakul in the B-ing Championship on the Mercedes-Benz Tour.

Namchok, runner up to Angelo Que in the ICTSI Mt. Malarayat Championship, Philippines, earlier in the year, grabbed an unlikely birdie at his last hole for a 67.

They lead fellow Thai Sattaya Sapupramai by a stroke with a two-round total of four under 140 at Bangpra Golf Club. Sattaya added a 70 to his opening round 71.

Jiramate Takes Route 66

Pattaya, September 16 – Newcomer Jiramate Chantharothai of Thailand upstaged multiple winner Prayad Marksaeng and a strong field with a sizzling six-under-par 66 to take a commanding lead after the first round of the US$50,000 B-ing Championship on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old Jiramate shot seven birdies and a lone bogey at Bangpra Golf Club in the best round of his professional career.

He leads the Mercedes-Benz Tour event by three shots from countryman Atthaphon Prathummanee, currently ranked 21st on the Order of Merit.

Thaworn Targets B-ing Championship

Pattaya, September 15 – Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant, fresh from a victory at the weekend, will be the player to beat at the Mercedes-Benz Tour’s B-ing Championship on home soil later this week.

The red-hot Thaworn will be bidding for his second title of the season on the Mercedes-Benz Tour following his victory in the Heritage Melaka Classic.

Among his challengers at Bangpra Golf Club near Pattaya from September 16-19 will be countryman Prayad Marksaeng, who competed in the Mercedes-Benz Championship on the European Tour last week.
